I am the grandson of Joseph J. Naffe, Jr., listed MIA from the battle of Tarawa. I have been trying to find out information about when he may have been sent to the shore, either the first day or second. He is offically listed with the Pioneers and I believe he was on the Middleton prior to debarcation. I have seen some information on the muster roll but honestly I cannot make out much from it.
I have just started reading your book. I have always wanted to go to Betio and look at the battlefield.
Any information you can provide would be greatly apprciated.
